Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT) Clinical Supervision

I am an approved designated supervisor (AS) by the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (AAMFT). An AAMFT Approved Supervisor is a marriage and family therapist who has completed the supervisor candidate training requirements established by AAMFT,  has been awarded the Approved Supervisor designation, and continues to meet the ongoing training and continuing education requirements.  I provide clinical supervision for Marriage and Family Therapists in California who are working toward their MFT license. 


I also provide supervision and training to licensed therapists who need additional support to deal with complex cases.

What does clinical supervision mean?

The meaning of supervision depends on the roles and responsibilities each person has:


Clinical supervisor 

Oversees the clinical work of therapists they are training. Supervisors also have a legal and ethical responsibility to ensure clients are getting quality care, ensure therapists are receiving the necessary professional development, and maintain the necessary policies, procedures, and documentation. 


Clinical supervisees

Therapists in the process of gaining the practical, administrative, legal, and ethical training needed to qualify for a professional license. Clinical supervision is an essential part of learning how to be a marriage counselor and family therapist in different locations and types of practices.   

Why is clinical supervision so important in counseling?

Clinical supervisors for an MFT focus on helping a therapist provide the best treatment while growing professionally:


  • Understand the different parts of a case.
  • Name key issues for each family member and the family as a whole. 
  • Set treatment goals.
  • Identify solutions that fit the case.
  • Improve clinical competence and skills.
  • Increase understanding of clinical and ethical issues. 

Marriage and Family Therapist License Requirements in California

There are several clinical and supervision requirements in order to become a licensed MFT in the state of CA. 


Licensure requirements include 3,000 clinical supervision hours.  These supervision sessions can include a combination of individual supervision, group supervision, and live observation. 


Make sure that your:


  • Training is in an approved location/setting. 
  • Supervisor has the credentials required by the state of California. 


Too many therapists spend years working toward their license only to find out that hundreds, or even thousands of hours, need to be redone.
