Family Therapy

Family Therapy

At Encomium our mission is to excavate undiscovered resources, strengths, and reservoirs of resilience inherent in the very nature of being human.

What is Family Therapy?

Family therapy is a type of counseling (psychotherapy) that helps family members improve how they get along, communicate with each other, and deal with conflicts, trauma, or changes. Families seek out therapy when they are dealing with issues that affect everyone or even just one member. Either way, the psychological health of everyone involved is suffering. Living like this for more time isn’t realistic.  I am a clinical psychologist with additional specialized training in Family Therapy in San Diego.

The Benefits of Family Therapy

Families are strange. Even when you have the best of intentions and solid values, being part of a family is hard.

Through different family therapy techniques, we name and worth through the issues hurting the family unit and each person in it. If you don’t treat these critical issues, they will come up and cause even more problems later on for everyone. Family therapy helps you work through the hurt feelings and tough experiences so that the entire family can have a more successful present and future.

What does a family therapist do?

A family therapist is a highly trained specialist who can assess how each family member is being impacted by overwhelming feelings and experiences.

Common reasons to
work with a family therapist include:

  • Divorce
  • Death of a family member
  • Substance abuse
  • Trauma
  • Stressed parent-child relationships
  • Hostile sibling relationships
  • Having to leave a family of origin due to a move or military re-assignment
  • The impact of deployment on the family
  • Helping a veteran reintegrate into the family
  • Moving to another school, state, or country
  • Diverse backgrounds
  • Identity issues

As a family therapist, I will help the entire family understand all of the factors that are leading to hurt and disconnect. We will also work on tools to help improve trust, communication, and boundaries.

As a result of family counseling techniques, you and your family will be able to identify and express your needs, learn how to work together, and have a healthier relationship.
