At Encomium our mission is to excavate undiscovered resources, strengths, and reservoirs of resilience inherent in the very nature of being human.
You sense it before you can name it. Something doesn’t feel right. You might feel sad, scared, angry, hopeless, stressed, or some combination of different emotions. It doesn’t make sense. You’ve tried to solve it on your own, but you can’t. Now, it’s getting harder to manage. These feelings are impacting your work, relationships, and daily life. You know it’s time for something different. That’s why you need anxiety and depression therapy.
Everyone gets sad. However, depression means your sad and negative feelings are not going away. These feelings are making every part of your life harder. You wind up feeling helpless, hopeless, and stuck.
Feeling sad, scared, and alone are normal responses to tough situations like losing your job, moving, or struggling with friends and/or family. In some cases, these feelings of sadness don’t go away on their own. Instead, they get worse. Eventually, you believe that everything is terrible and that it will stay this way forever. You wind up feeling helpless and hopeless.
Anxiety is also a normal human reaction to being scared. This emotion is meant to get us moving. It can help us survive in an emergency or push us to win in a competition. Our bodies and brains are built to respond to anxiety in short bursts. We get a shot of anxiety, react, and then go back to a regular resting state.
Anxiety is a problem when it is constantly high, gets in the way of daily life, and impacts your health, sleep, relationships, and/or work/school. Chronic anxiety can make you feel scared all of the time. It can also make you feel out of control since everything around you feels like a threat or potential danger.
Depression and anxiety are different from each other. However, anxiety and depression happen together very often. When you feel sad and helpless, it’s common to have anxiety about living this way for the rest of your life. When you constantly feel scared, it’s common to get very sad and upset at the lack of control over your life.
Treatment for anxiety and/or depression starts by identifying the problem. Just giving it a name can help you think differently. We will help you brainstorm new possibilities. You will also learn new skills and resources for problem-solving.
To help you overcome anxiety and depression, we’ll look at the negative thoughts, emotions, and behaviors getting in the way of your insight and strengths.
I combine mindfulness techniques with Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Narrative Therapy to help you learn about the cognitive distortions causing the pain, behaviors you use to numb or avoid the suffering, and healthy coping skills that help relieve symptoms.
Depression and anxiety therapy with a trained mental health professional results in:
